Sports Injury Treatment and Prevention in Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and Port St. Lucie

Being active is healthy for your body and your mind. However, if you are a weekend warrior, you may not be getting the activity your body needs throughout the week. This can increase your chance of injury.

Preventing Sports Injuries

Regardless of the sport or activity, you participate in, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of injury.

You should do some type of exercise throughout the week to keep your muscles in condition. Walking is a great low impact exercise. You can choose an aerobic or strength training workout as well. You should work out once or twice during the weekend to keep your body in shape.

Should You Stretch?

Stretching is generally believed to be beneficial for preventing injury, but the research doesn't necessarily agree. Reports on the effectiveness of stretching are conflicting. It's now believed that it depends on the type of activity you are participating in.

Sports like soccer and running have lots of stretch-shortening cycles, known as high SSC's. Cycling and swimming are lower intensity. They are known as limited SSC's. It seems that those who participate in high SSC sports can benefit from stretching, while low SSC activities don't require it.

Other studies have shown stretching to help prevent injuries when it's done as part of a warm-up routine. Regardless of whether you choose to stretch, you should warm up. The best way to warm up is to perform a few of the motions you will be doing in your chosen activity.

Listen to Your Body

One of the most effective ways to prevent injuries is to listen to your body. You may have heard the quote "no pain no gain". Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, and it shouldn't be ignored.

This also means not pushing your body beyond your limits. It's easy to get caught up in competition and ignore the signals your body is sending, but your health should be your top concern.

Sports Injury Treatment

Despite our best efforts, injuries do happen. Treatment will depend on the severity of the injury. R.I.C.E. is standard sports injury treatment. It stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. However, some injuries will need professional care.
